How to find your home's water, electrical and gas shutoffs
Know where these three critical controls are located before an emergency happens

The DIY Playbook's Casey Finn walks us through the three most important shutoffs to locate before an emergency happens: the main water valve, electrical panel and gas line.
Knowing where these controls are can help minimize damage and reduce stress when dealing with a burst pipe, electrical problem or gas leak.
1. Main Water Shutoff
If a pipe bursts or you discover a leak somewhere in your home, shutting off the main water supply can help prevent major damage. Casey recommends locating the valve now and making sure everyone in your household knows where to find it.
2. Electrical Panel
Your home's breaker box allows you to shut off power to individual circuits or the entire house. Casey says homeowners should make sure each breaker is clearly labeled so it's easy to identify in an emergency.
3. Gas Line
The gas shutoff may be located outside your home or in the basement. While homeowners generally should not turn off gas service themselves, it's important to know where the shutoff is located in case you need to direct emergency responders or your gas company to it.
