CHICAGO (WLS) -- Everyone knows April showers bring May flowers. And with warmer weather finally here, it's the perfect time to start planting.
If you're looking to elevate your outdoor space, there's a simple, foolproof way to create beautiful potted plants: The "thriller, filler, spiller" formula.
Casey Finn of The DIY Playbook invited Tanja Babich to her own backyard to show us how.
The "thriller, filler, spiller" method is all about balance, texture, and visual interest:
Thriller: A tall, eye-catching plant that adds height (placed in the back or center)
Filler: Mid-size plants that add color and fullness
Spiller: Trailing plants that spill over the edge
Planter with a drainage hole
Potting soil
Thriller plant (height)
Filler plants (color)
Spiller plants (for the edge)
Gardening gloves
Small shovel
Step 1: Add Soil
Fill your planter with potting soil, leaving a few inches of space at the top.
Tip: You can place empty plastic containers at the bottom of the pot to reduce the amount of soil needed and keep it lighter.
Step 2: Arrange Before You Plant
Place your plants - still in their containers - on top of the soil to map out your design:
-Thriller in the back or center
-Fillers around it
-Spillers near the edge
This helps you visualize the final look before committing.
Step 3: Plant + Pack
Here's the trick that makes it foolproof: Remove plants from containers, but place containers back in the pot and fill the pot with soil.
Remove containers and add plants to the holes.
Step 4: Water Thoroughly
Once everything is planted, Give everything a deep soak.to help it settle and thrive.
