CHICAGO (WLS) -- A person of interest in the homicide investigation of a man who died after being pushed down the stairs at a popular bar downtown Chicago has been released from custody, Chicago police said Wednesday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office also identified the man killed early Monday as Bryan Christopher Watson, 35, of Chicago.

Watson died after being pushed down the stairs while trying to break up a fight at Hubbard Inn in the city's River North neighborhood just after 1:15 a.m.

CPD previously said a man had been taken into custody, and charges were pending. But on Wednesday, police said no charges have been filed, and the man has been released from custody.

Authorities said a woman initially called 911 to say she had been injured.

But police say a 32-year-old man was involved in an altercation with a group, and Watson tried to intervene. The 32-year-old then allegedly pushed Watson, causing him to fall down the stairs.

Police said Watson was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers took the suspect into custody on the scene.

A spokesperson for the restaurant and bar issued a statement, saying, "The Hubbard Inn team is devastated by last night's tragic incident and our hearts are with the family who lost their loved one. We can't comment on the specifics as the work of CPD is ongoing, but we are closing our doors to the public for the next couple of days while giving staff time to grieve and provide access to mental health support to those who may need it."

Hubbard Inn's manager declined an interview but shared that they are trying to support their employees and assist with the investigation.

Police are conducting a homicide investigation.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle canceled a campaign event that was scheduled for Thursday at Hubbard Inn.

"Due to unforeseen circumstances and out of respect regarding a tragic incident at the venue, we have made the decision to cancel the event that was scheduled," the campaign team said.

According to a recording reached when calling the business, Hubbard Inn is expected to reopen Thursday.
