Mayor Johnson to sign executive order regulating data centers in Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Mayor Brandon Johnson signed executive order regulating data centers in Chicago on Tuesday.

The order establishes a Data Centers Task Force to implement a long-term strategy.

"Chicago will not allow unchecked development to strain our water supply, drive up energy costs, or compromise the health of our communities," Johnson said.

One of the first steps involves advancing legislation to establish a temporary moratorium on new data centers and existing facilities.

Chicago is home to approximately 39 data centers.
