Chicago Auto Show features new adaptive technology

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Snow fell as some visitors poured into McCormick Place for day two of the Chicago Auto Show and the weather was a perfect backdrop to highlight what's called adaptive technology on some cars.

A feature like "lane keeping assist" becomes that much more important in this kind of weather. Something called the collision mitigation braking system is also useful.

"If you're not slowing down and you're in imminent danger it gives you an audible and visual warning, actually tightens your seatbelt and puts pressure on the brake," said Acura product specialist Valerie Ojeda.

At Chicago's Auto Show, which runs through next Sunday, drivers weighed in on technology meant to keep the motorist safe, no matter what Mother Nature throws down.

Acura's RDX and TLX are just two of the cars in the Acura line which feature the braking system and all-wheel drive, perfect for those who drive in Chicagoland's wintery weather.

Jeep is showing motorists the latest in its antilock braking system and its unique technique is raising eyebrows and fear factors.

"One of the biggest pluses is when he went over that hill, he stopped at the midway point, which is crazy because I didn't think he even reversed it," said Megan Smith. "So the brakes definitely worked in that car."

Kia unveiled the concept car, the Trailster, with all wheel drive. The automaker is dipping its toe in the rough road market. In only the past two years has the automaker offered all-wheel drive on two of its cars.

So now drivers have an option of all-wheel drive on the lesser expensive Kia Sorento and Sportage, ideal features at any price range for drivers braving Chicago's slick February terrain.

The Chicago Auto Show runs through Feb. 22nd. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for seniors and children ages 7 to 12, and free for children 6 and under.
