College campus safety tips from David Nance

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Generally speaking, university campuses are safe. But that can also lead the students to let down their guard. Most of the so-called "crimes of opportunity" can occur in the first few months of students returning to campus.

Personal safety expert David Nance shared safety tips for college students as they return to school.

Colleges are mandated to provide crime statistics to students and families. The U.S. Department of Education has compiled campus safety numbers for over 6,000 colleges. To get data for a specific institution or campus, use the Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool.
