CHICAGO (WLS) -- A resurgence of mosquitoes could follow this week's heavy rains.

The insects like to breed in standing water, so experts say homeowners should empty any water that may have accumulated in their lawn.

Another suggestion: wear a mosquito repellant.

"Picaridin is a new product that has a little bit less oily situation than most of the DEET-based repellants. Has a little bit less scent. Works out very well in most situations," George Balis, Clarke Mosquito Control, said.

Mosquitoes aren't just pests, they also spread West Nile Virus, a potentially serious illness in humans.
