Parents at St. Ignatius College Prep were notified Tuesday morning that a student had been diagnosed with the mumps.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- St. Ignatius College Prep parents and students were notified Tuesday that a student has been diagnosed with the mumps, officials confirmed.

Since January, this is the seventh case of mumps, according to the Chicago Department of Public Health.

School officials said the student is not hospitalized and recovering at home.

"I was concerned about the mumps because of the potential for, especially boys, being sterile," said parent Kevin Barron.

Student Henry Zapata and other students said they don't really think much about the illness.

"Well, I heard it can make your face swell, but it's not really fatal," Zapata said.

So far this year, the people infected ranged in age from 7 to 49 years old. One person was hospitalized because of their illness.

During the same time last year, seven cases were confirmed in Chicago.
