No decorations at Naperville's Halloween home

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- For 18 years, a home on Conan Doyle Drive in Naperville was a Halloween haven. But the family's now opting out because of new neighborhood association rules.

Nick Thomas said even the rock bands whose songs were played promoted the family-friendly tradition.

"They all contacted us saying how cool this was. Well once they all put it on their Facebook pages, then it starts to go crazy," Thomas said.

More than 8,000 spectators drove by the home to see the massive display and light show in Halloweens past. Because of complaints from neighbors about noise and traffic, the neighborhood association approved a holiday decorations rule limiting them to 50-percent of a homeowner's yard. Thomas had to scale back if he wanted to continue.

"I think I'm a big kid at heart and I just enjoy it," Thomas said. He used the display to raise money for charity and said that won't be possible anymore. "It's an hour people would come. They'd spend an hour. It was a place to forget about troubles."

Also, under the new rules, the display can be up for only 30 days before and 30 days after a holiday. That's hard with a display of this size, Thomas said, which can take three weeks to put up.

This year, he opted out altogether.

"People are accustomed after 18 years to seeing the whole house, the front of the house, the light show. What do you cut out?" he said.

"It was really targeted at this display. It was targeted here," Jim Jandick, who supports Thomas and his display, said.

"You didn't have to pay to go to some pumpkin farm. You could just drive down the street. And the kids loved it," Wendy Miller said.
