Antonio Smith killed, 7 hurt in Chicago shootings on Wednesday
CHICAGO -- A 9-year-old boy was killed Wednesday afternoon and seven others were wounded in city shootings throughout the day.
The boy was shot about 4:05 p.m. in Greater Grand Crossing on the South Side, police said. He was in the backyard of an apartment building in the 1200 block of East 71st when he was shot multiple times, police said. Officers found the boy while responding to a call of shots fired.
He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he later died, authorities said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death but could provide no additional details Wednesday night.
Rosetta Jordan, 81, who lives on the block, said her son, 45-year-old Eddie Jordan, heard gunshots. Before going out to investigate, he ordered his 9-year-old son to the basement where he would be safe from stray gunfire.
She said her son found a "neatly dressed" boy lying in the backyard of a neighboring apartment building.
As Jordan stood at her front door, several police cars, with lights and sirens activated, rocketed past her home on three separate occasions.
"I'm still shaking," Rosetta Jordan said Wednesday evening. "It's just so sad."
In the most recent nonfatal shooting, a man was grazed by a bullet in West Pullman on the Far South Side.
About 10:45 p.m., the 23-year-old was in the 11600 block of South Loomis when he was grazed in the leg, police said. He was in good condition at MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island.
About a half-hour earlier, two people were shot in Englewood on the South Side.
A 17-year-old boy and a 45-year-old man were talking outside in the 7000 block of South Morgan at 10:10 p.m. when someone inside a passing SUV fired shots, police said. The teen was shot under the arm and in the shoulder, while the man was shot in the leg.
The teen was taken to Comer, and the man to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. Conditions for both had stabilized as of early Thursday.
At 9:30 p.m., a 14-year-old boy was shot in Hermosa on the Northwest Side.
The boy was standing in the 2400 block of North Kilbourn when he heard gunshots and felt pain, police said. He was taken with an arm wound to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was in good condition early Thursday, police said.
Fifteen minutes before that, a man was shot in the South Shore neighborhood.
The 22-year-old was arguing with a "known offender" outside in the 7800 block of South Bennett about 9:15 p.m., police said. The other person left, returned with a gun and shot the 22-year-old in the groin and buttocks. His condition was stable late Wednesday at Stroger Hospital, police said.
Wednesday's first shooting happened in Oakland on the South Side, where a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man were critically wounded.
About 3:45 p.m., both were standing outside in the 3900 block of South Lake Park when a green minivan pulled up and at least two shooters got out, opening fire on them, police said.
The 18-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital and the 16-year-old to Comer. Both were listed in critical condition.
