Chicago prepares for start of 2016
Tens of thousands of people were at parties all over the area ready to celebrate the New Year.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Tens of thousands of people welcomed in 2016 at parties all over the area amid very tight security.

There was no credible terrorist threat here in Chicago, for this New Year's Eve night, officials said. But still -- police did ramp up their patrols around the city.

"Whether you're celebrating at home, a friend's house, or large events, we'd like to remind everyone to be responsible and safe," said Deputy Chief Steve Georgas/Chicago Police Dept.

Safety was a big concern, at all the parties but especially at Navy Pier. Where up to 75,000 people were expected to countdown to 2016 on land and on boat.

A spokesperson tells us while they will be on the lookout for suspicious activity - they are not concerned about an attack. "We have heightened security are working with CPD navy pier police and private security as well," said Payal Patel/ spokesperson for Navy Pier.

Most people took the security in stride saying their biggest concerns were staying out of the cold -- and having a good time.
