20 puppies rescued after South Side apartment fire

Twenty puppies were rescued Monday after Chicago firefighters extinguished a small fire at an apartment building in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, fire officials said.

None of the dogs were injured. Chicago Animal Care and Control took possession of the puppies.

Firefighters responded to the house fire in the 4000-block of South Hermitage on the city's South Side around 1:25 p.m.

The home belongs to a person known to take in stray animals. There were birds and insects in the house as well, officials said.

No word on the cause of the fire yet.
