Man, 21, dies after falling through ice in Bartlett

BARTLETT, Ill. (WLS) -- A 21-year-old man died Sunday evening after trying to walk across a frozen lake in suburban Bartlett and then falling through into the frigid waters, police said.

At about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the man was walking on the lake at West Branch Forest Preserve, police said. A forest preserve officer attempted to rescue him, but couldn't get to him.

"We were just yelling at him, trying to get him to go the other way," said Scott Oglanian. "He wasn't listening. He finally fell in and he managed to get himself on the lake. And we were like, 'Stay there and wait for help to come.' He started rolling on his stomach trying to get to us and we were like, 'Don't do that, don't do that' because he was coming toward thinner ice."

An individual who was with the man called 911 and rescuers located the man after about an hour.

The victim was identified as Leon Gonzalez, of Bartlett, according to the DuPage County Coroner's Office.

Gonzalez was transported to Northwestern Medicine's Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, where he later died.
