CHICAGO (WLS) --November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 30 million American children and adults have diabetes; and 7 million don't even know it. But diabetes is a preventable disease and manageable for those who have it.
The latest nutrition guidelines from the American Diabetes Association are actually quite similar to the healthy eating recommendations for everyone else. Gone are forbidden foods, and even the word "diet" is deliberately avoided. Instead, they say "that there is not a 'one-size-fits-all' eating pattern for those with diabetes." The ADA stresses: tailor goals to individual preferences, economics, religious and cultural patterns, etc.
Registered Dietitian Pat Baird visited ABC 7 Eyewitness News to talk more about diabetes and can be done to prevent the disease.
