CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 17-year-old girl was shot in the torso in the city's West Side, officials said.

Officials said the shooting happened in the 4700-block of West Gladys Avenue at 2:14 p.m.

Police said the victim was standing on the block when someone in a gray or silver four-door sedan fired shots and hit the victim multiple times in the torso.

One of the neighborhood residents described the shooting.

"It was a female sitting on porch with a group of boys. They got shot at and they ran in the house then the police came around and knocked on the door and that's when the guys said, 'Oh, she's shot help her,'" Sweetie Smith, a neighbor said.

The people who live on the block said the shooting was an extremely rare case of violence.

"The average day over here, you see kids riding bikes and just enjoying being kids. This is one of the few areas in our community where kids can be kids. Today is such out of the norm for our community. We don't experience that over here," Clinton Booney McFowler, community organizer, said.

She was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
