Honoring the men and women who serve in the military is the message behind an upcoming event in Antioch. Take a Vet Fishing's 2017 event is coming up on May 21 at the Thirsty Turtle Marina and Brew & View Pub.

Veterans from around Illinois are invited for a day of fishing, food, and fun. Groups will begin casting their lines at 7:00 a.m. There's a Veterans Memorial Party that starts at 12:00 p.m. at the Thirsty Turtle Marina and Brew & View Pub. Food will be served starting at 12:30 p.m. All families of participating military personnel are welcome to join the Veterans honor party. Each guest must be registered through the Take a Vet Fishing website here.

Each Veteran who participates in the event will be recognized with gifts, and one Veteran will receive a trip to Canada. Dave VanDoorn, director of Prostaff and organizer for Take a Vet Fishing, joined ABC 7 to talk about how the event brings communities together.
