Funeral held for woman killed in crash with off-duty cop

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Funeral services were held Thursday for Cheqita Adams, the woman who died in a crash with a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer who was being pursued by police at the time of the crash.

Her family is left with their sorrow and many unanswered questions.

"It's a great loss for the family and the community," her cousin Katrina Wardlow said.

Mourning the 27-year-old were many young people who are missing the young woman they called "Quita."

"I love you so much. Rest in peace and I love you," said her niece, Dreamanna Marshall.

"She didn't just only think about herself, she thought about others. And I really liked that about her. She always loved everybody and she always had feelings for people," her cousin Mykyiah Brown recalled.

Last week as she waited to make a turn on Roosevelt, an off-duty Chicago police officer - being pursued by a Chicago police car - hit Adams' car. Adams and the off-duty officer, Taylor Clark, were killed.

"Right now, I'm still trying to be strong for my grandbabies," her mother Chereta Adams said.

ABC7 has learned a male and female officer in the gang enforcement unit were in pursuit of Officer Clark. The officers involved are being questioned by investigators with the Independent Police Review Authority and video of the pursuit is being reviewed.

It is still unclear why Officer Clark didn't stop for flashing lights and what connection - if any - there was between the pursuing officers and Officer Clark.

Adams' family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City, the officers and the estate of Officer Clark.

"They killed my baby and she died an unnecessary horrible death and she didn't have to," Chereta Adams said.

Services for Officer Clark will be held on Saturday.

Prior to the crash, the off-duty officer was pursued by an on-duty officer, who mistakenly thought he was involved in a carjacking. Surveillance video shows part of the pursuit.

Adams' relatives said the 27-year-old was looking forward to working at the Taste of Chicago as a security officer.

Chicago police have referred all questions about the incident to the city's Independent Police Review Authority, which has not commented on their investigation.
