48 Cook County Sheriff's deputies facing discipline after time fraud investigation

Dozens of Cook County Sheriff's deputies face suspension or firing for fraudulently documenting time spent at work, the sheriff's office said.

The allegations come after an internal probe found workers were arriving late and in some cases leaving work for hours at a time without marking it on their time sheets.

A total of 48 deputies and supervisors face discipline in the case. The sheriff's office said it is seeking termination of 11 of those deputies and two supervisors. The terminations must be adjudicated by the independent Merit Board before they take effect under Illinois law.

The others disciplined will receive suspensions ranging from 15 to 60 days.

The sheriff's office said it has adjusted and increased supervision and introduced electronic accountability measures.
