4th Skokie shooting suspect due in court
Dzevad Avdic, the fourth man charged in the murder of Maxwell Gadau, is due in court. Police are searching for a fifth suspect.

SKOKIE, Ill. (WLS) -- A judge denied bond for Dzevad Avdic, the fourth man charged in the murder and robbery of Skokie teen Maxwell Gadau. A fifth suspect in the 17-year-old's shooting death is still at large.

Prosecutors said Avdic, 19, planned the drug deal and robbery gone bad. The alleged plan was to rob a 17-year-old girl and steal the marijuana she was going to sell to them late last month. Gadau accompanied the girl. He was fatally shot in the back and the girl was critically injured.

A judge denied bond for Jeremy Ly, Myles Hughes and Nicholas Smith, the other three 19-year-old suspects, on Sunday. Police are looking for a fifth suspect, the alleged gunman.

Family and friends attended the funeral for the Niles North varsity swimmer the same day. Gadau's parents said he was a good kid in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that he knew two of the suspects - one in particular.

"What's doubly tragic is not only is my son dead, but one of the individuals arrested was somebody my son was very close to. When they were on the swim team together, this individual was a couple of years older than my son, very much a mentor to Max," said Peter Gadau, the victim's father.

"I don't believe they knew it was Max," said Patricia Gadau, the victim's mother. "I don't believe that."

"They were smart. They had a future. Unfortunately, all their lives, including my son's, have been touched by this," Peter Gadau said.
