CHICAGO (WLS) -- A water tower removed from the top of a North Side museum cannot be repaired and will now have to be replaced.

Chicago's so-called Andersonville Water Tower on top of the Swedish American Museum near Clark and Foster had to be removed back in March.

An inspection determined the 87-year-old landmark was unsafe. A closer look by engineers has now revealed the structure is too old to repair.

Museum officials say they are nearly halfway to their goal of raising $150,000 dollars to recreate a new water tower.

There are plans to memorialize the original structure in a museum display.
