Check sex offender registry to plan a safe Halloween

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is encouraging families to check the state's sex offender registry so they can plan safe trick or treat routes this Halloween.

This week, Madigan's office will conduct compliance checks on registered sex offenders to verify that offenders actually will live where they claim. The Illinois Sex Offender Registry Team works to ensure the sex offender registry continues to serve as a useful tool for parents.

Illinois law prohibits sex offenders on parole, mandatory supervised release or probation from distributing candy or other items to children on Halloween.
