CHICAGO (WLS) -- Steven LaVoie remains hospitalized in critical condition, but is making "small encouraging improvements," according to his family.

LaVoie was shot twice by a longtime employee at the ArrowStream office in Chicago's Loop on Thursday morning. Gunman Tony DeFrances, who had recently been demoted, fatally shot himself, police said.

"We are celebrating each small milestone. Jody and the girls are so thankful for the outpouring of support and well wishes for Steve's recovery," was posted on the CaringBridge website set up by his family to update LaVoie's condition.

Near LaGrange, where the LaVoie family lives, red ribbons are being tied on trees in support.

"Red is Steve's favorite color and these ribbons are a beautiful showing of love for Steve and his family from the whole community. Thank you -- it means the world to us," the post said.
