PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- A former Chicago area teacher who became a missionary in Haiti has been stabbed to death according to police and friends Friday. George Knoop, 78, was attacked inside his home in the Delmas section of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday afternoon according to friend and fellow church member Zach Segaar-King.

Knoop was able ot call friends for help and told him that he recognized his assailant before he died, Segaar-King said.

A computer was apparently stolen during the attack but it does not appear that robbery was the motive and the slain missionary likely knew his assailant through his ministry efforts in the country, he said.

Authorities recovered the knife that was apparently used in the attack at the man's home, which he shared with two roommates who were not home at the time.

Knoop was a member of the Moody Church in Chicago before he moved to Haiti following the devastating 2010 earthquake. According to Larry Campbell, vice president of operations for Missionary Flights International, with whom Knoop also worked, the former teacher felt called by God to work in Haiti after attending a church presentation about the earthquake.

No arrests have been made yet and the motive for the murder is unknown.
