Driver shot in neck near Kennedy Expressway at Sacramento

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Police are investigating a drive-by shooting on Chicago's Northwest Side that snarled traffic on the Kennedy Expressway Thursday afternoon.

A 31-year-old man was rushed to Illinois Masonic Hospital after he was shot while driving near the Sacramento entrance ramp.

The victim's mother told Eyewitness News late Tuesday that her son has a bullet lodged in his neck but is talking and expected to survive. She identified him as 31-year-old Jose Santiago and says he works as a tow truck driver. She said he was talking on the phone in his personal vehicle when he was shot. The bullet apparently entered through the driver-side window.

"Just heard a loud bang and ran to the window. Looked out, looked out the side window here because it sounded like something had hit the house," said Josh Barnhart, who heard the shot fired.

Police say the male driver of a light-colored sedan was shot in the neck while in his car. The bullet came from a vehicle that had pulled alongside him in the 2900-block of North Sacramento, about half a block from the expressway entrance.

One man who didn't want to give his name was outside with his grandchildren at the time of the shooting.

"I told my daughter to take the babies in the house. That was the only thing I could think of. Just go in the house," he said.

"Folks gathering, you know, looking out the windows, coming down here to see what was going on. And all the police show up," Barnhart said.

Police say the driver who was shot drove away and got on the Kennedy, then stopped on the Sacramento on-ramp.

Police arrived and shut down the entrance for several hours as they investigated. The ramp was reopened around 8:30 p.m.
