PHILADELPHIA -- The search is on for three suspects who shot and killed a man and threatened his wife at gunpoint while his three young children were upstairs.

Police say the victim, who had been taken to the hospital in critical condition after the Monday night incident, died early Tuesday morning.

Investigators say the man had been shot three times in the head.

It happened after 11:00 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Ruby Street in Southwest Philadelphia.

Investigators say a 50-year-old man was upstairs with his wife and three children, ages 5, 2, and 10 months, when three men came in through the front door, which was not locked.

"One of the perpetrators, who was wearing a mask, took the wife back into the kitchen," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, "put a gun to her head and asked, 'Where is the money? Give me the money,' and threatened to shoot her. She stated she had no money, and then she heard a gunshot coming from the living room."

When police arrived they found the woman's husband lying on the floor.

Investigators were able to collect evidence at the scene, including a shell casing from a large caliber weapon.

They found a weapon on the porch of the home, which they believe the suspects dropped as they fled.

Around the same time officers were called to the home, a car crash was reported at 51st and Locust streets in West Philadelphia.

When police arrived on that scene, they found an overturned Chevrolet sedan in the middle of an intersection. It had hit a parked car and flipped over.

A bloody handgun was found inside the vehicle. Everyone inside the car had fled the scene. Police were working to determine if that accident may be connected in some way to the home invasion.

So far there have been no arrests in the case.
