CHICAGO (WLS) -- Gas prices are at the lowest levels in years and many people are wondering how low can they go.
Gas prices are below $2.00 a gallon outside of Cook County, with some gas stations offering $1.87 for a gallon of regular unleaded.
The average gas price in the Chicago area is $2.33 a gallon, according to GasBuddy.com. Nationally, it's $2.24 a gallon.
Gasbuddy.com shows the peaks in gas prices in May 2011 and March 2012 when there was concern prices may get to $5.00 a gallon.
2015 is expected to see a trend upward, but for now, appreciate the break in fuel prices.
