MOORESTOWN, N.J. -- A homeowner fought back against intruders armed with bats in Moorestown, Burlington County.

Police said the two men armed with bats, forced their way into the home on the 700 block of Hartford Road around 12:20 a.m. Sunday.

A resident inside managed to grab a knife from the kitchen and stabbed both men, police say.

Arriving police and medics pronounced one of the suspects dead at the scene. The other had fled.

Michelle Jerrell of Moorestown said, "It's pretty silent around here, so this is very disruptive to Moorestown."

The home stands alone on the block surrounded by new and active construction.

Some residents came out curious to learn more details.

"They just want to know what's going on, if it's random, if it's not random, who's involved, who's not involved, so we can take proper precautions for ourselves and our families," Jerrell said.

The Prosecutor's Office said the scene is contained and there is no reason for the public to be alarmed.

Detectives are investigating whether a man who arrived at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro later in the morning with a stab wound to the leg is connected to this incident.

The homeowner is expected to be okay.

The name of the man killed has not been released.
