CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 21-year-old man was fatally shot by Chicago police after pointing a gun at an officer, according to the Fraternal Order of Police.

FOP Spokesman Pat Camden said officers were on a gang mission in the 13300-block of South Forrestville Avenue on Chicago's Altgeld Gardens neighborhood around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when they saw the man riding a bicycle. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man at Darius Colegarrit of the 200 block of East 132nd Street.

"They put the spotlight on him to draw his attention. They wanted to stop and talk to him," Camden said. "As the spotlight hit him, he pulls a gun out of his waistband and points it at the unmarked vehicle."

Camden said when officers jumped out of their vehicle, the suspect jumped off his bike and started running. He said the suspect turned, pulled the gun and pointed it at police.

"The officer opens fire, defending himself against an armed offender," Camden said. "The individual that was shot is a known gang member, from the information that I have been given."

An officer struck Colegarrit and he was pronounced dead at the scene at11:45 p.m. There were no reports of injuries to officers.

Investigators recovered a semi-automatic weapon at the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
