James Tillman charged in shooting of officer during carjacking attempt in Gresham

CHICAGO (WLS) -- James Tillman, 21, was charged in the shooting of an off-duty Cook County correctional officer during an alleged attempted carjacking in Chicago's Gresham neighborhood.

Police said Tillman shot the officer in the hand while trying to steal his car in the 7900-block of South Paulina Street around 3:40 a.m. Sunday. The 34-year-old officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he is expected to recover.

Tillman, of the 1200-block of West Hastings Street, was charged with attempted murder in the first-degree, aggravated battery and aggravated attempted vehicular hijacking. He is due in bond court on Monday.
