Man charged in Rogers Park shooting
Eric Vaughn, 31, has been charged in a fatal shooting Sunday night that took the life of 28 year old William Lewis.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Eric Vaughn, 31, has been charged in a fatal shooting witnessed by Chicago Alderman Joe Moore, who represents the 49th Ward.

Police said Vaughn, of the 4400-block of Clarendon Avenue, was arrested on Saturday.

Prosecutors say Vaughn handed a gun to a teenager in his car and told the teen to shoot an alleged rival. Vaughn's co-defendant allegedly missed the target, hitting 28-year-old William Lewis in the back instead as he was waiting for the bus on a busy commercial strip in the 1300-block of West Devon Avenue in Rogers Park.

Lewis, a photographer who recently moved to the area, was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he later died. The shooting appears to be a case of mistaken identity.

Vaughn has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder in the first degree, misdemeanor reckless driving and three traffic citations, according to police. The co-defendant has not yet been charged.

Ald. Moore was clearly shaken by what he witnessed.

"Until you do that, you don't really realize how incredible and how senseless it is," Moore said. "By the time we came back to the scene, one of the residents of the building immediately adjacent to the sidewalk was out there with a brush and water and bleach cleaning the sidewalk. That's something no one should have to do, not in any neighborhood in this city."

Vaughn is due in bond court on Monday.
