CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was injured in an apartment fire early Friday morning in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood.

Firefighters responded around 4 a.m. to a three-story apartment building in the 8100-block of South Drexel Avenue.

A 54-year-old man suffered burns to his body. Frank Lawrence, the victim's brother, said he tried to get them both out as quickly as possible.

"It's scary, very scary. Because I didn't think we were going to get out the gate. He's kind of older, so I don't think he was going to make it if we jumped," Lawrence said.

Lawrence's brother was transported in serious-to-fair condition to Jackson Park Hospital.

The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes. There was damage to the apartment on the first floor. Three people who live in the building were displaced. The American Red Cross was on the scene to help them out.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
