MADERA, Calif. -- Madera police are looking for at least two suspects who they say shot and killed a Good Samaritan trying to help the victim of a violent robbery.

Eusebio Gil loved his family, the Raiders and cracking jokes.

"He sacrificed his life for somebody else. He sacrificed his life for somebody else he didn't know,"said a friend who asked not to be shown on camera.

Mr. D's, located at Ninth and Gateway in Madera, remained closed for hours after Gil was gunned down late Sunday night. Police said Gil, who worked as the bar's security guard, saw two men robbing and beating a victim with a bat near the railroad tracks before his death.

"This victim was yelling for help and the only person around was Mr. Gil who went to his aid," Officer Joe Chavez said.

Chavez said the suspects pulled a gun out and shot Gil.

"The people who committed this are extremely violent. They committed a robbery using a bat and then they were also armed with a handgun. They weren't afraid to use it against the victim," Chavez said.

Officers are reviewing surveillance video from the bar and nearby businesses to identify the suspects and their getaway car. Investigators said Gil passed away on the way to the hospital.

His friends are shocked he died so suddenly.

"For nothing, who knows how much money they were after, it couldn't have been much," a friend said.

Anyone who witnessed the attack is asked to call the Madera Police Department.
