Police seek driver in fatal hit-and-run
Police are searching for the driver that struck and killed a 46-year-old man in Mt. Prospect then sped away.

MT. PROSPECT, Ill. (WLS) -- Police are searching for the driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run in northwest suburban Mt. Prospect.

A 46-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed near the intersection of Algonquin Road and Briarwood Drive around 8:15 p.m. Sunday. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim.

Surveillance footage shows the victim slowly walking around the sidewalk on Briarwood Drive towards Algonquin Road. He pauses before entering the crosswalk, but then continues into it despite oncoming traffic. He is nearly halfway across the road when a vehicle strikes him and speeds away.

Residents who live and work in the area say the crossing is dangerous.

"To me, it's not safe at all because even though we have the crosswalk signs, people don't respect it," says Yadira Garcia. "It's a very high traffic street and people don't take it seriously."

Police are looking for the vehicle involved, which is possibly a dark-colored vehicle with front end damage. They are also looking for any witnesses to the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any additional information should contact the Mount Prospect Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team at 847-870-5656. Anyone wishing to leave an anonymous tip can call Crime Stoppers at 847-590-7867 or texting "MPPD [plus your tip]" to 274637.
