Oracle, Ariz. (WLS) -- An Arizona Republican congressional candidate is apologizing after mistaking a busload of YMCA campers for illegal immigrant children.

Adam Kwasman took off after the bus in the middle of a speech to his supporters. He tweeted "Bus coming in. This is not compassion. This is the abrogation of the rule of law," though the tweet was later deleted.

The children actually turned out to be YMCA campers from the Marana school district. Media on the scene reported the children laughing and taking pictures on their phones as the protesters gathered around them.

Kwasman has apologized for the incident.

"I apologize, I'm sorry," Kwasman said, according to ABC News. "I didn't know. I was leaving when I saw the school bus."

Kwasman, a Tea Party candidate, will face former Arizona House Majority Leader Andy Tobin and businessman Gary Kiehne in the Republican party primary for Arizona's 1st district later this month.
