CHICAGO (WLS) -- A special ceremony was held Tuesday to honor students for their winning artwork, essays and poetry on the subject of gun violence.

The Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence hosted the 19th annual "Student Voices" contest. Awards were presented Tuesday morning at Rachel Carson Elementary in the Gage Park neighborhood.

The contest gives young people, who are all too often the victims of gun violence, a voice in the fight to prevent it. Some students won for their poetry.

Over 1,200 students entered the contest, and a panel selected the 17 winners and two honorable mentions.
