Veterans Day: Free meals for those who have served

CHICAGO (WLS) -- On Veterans Day, America honors the men and women who have served our nation.

President Barack Obama hosted veterans and their families for a breakfast Friday morning. One of the guests is a 108-year-old WWII veteran from Pennsylvania. The president also visited Arlington National Cemetery for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel delivered remarks at noon at the city's annual Veterans Day wreath-laying ceremony at Soldier Field.

Britain's Prince Harry and Prince Philip visited the Field of Remembrance Friday at Westminster Abbey in London, where red poppies honor the memory of the millions of people who lost their lives during WWI.

Brookfield Zoo also remembered those who have proudly served, with a ceremony at 1 p.m. Zoo admission is free for all guests on Veterans Day.

Many restaurants plan to show their appreciation for veterans by offering free food.

IHOP will offer a free stack of pancakes to all veterans and active duty military, Wendy's has free combos for vets and and Olive Garden will give veterans a free entree on Friday.

Golden Corral will also offer the Military Appreciation Meal on Monday, Nov. 14 from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Red Lobster will also offer a free appetizer or dessert with a valid military ID on Nov. 10 and 11.

Many restaurants are offering a free meal or item from appetizers to desserts including Applebees, California Pizza Kitchen, Chili's, Denny's and On The Border.
