JAMAICA, N.Y. -- A woman is in critical condition after jumping out of a moving van in Queens, and a man is now facing charges in connection with the incident.

Detectives are still trying to figure out what happened and why the 22-year-old woman couldn't wait for the van to stop.

The troubling sequence began just after 4:30 Sunday afternoon at 106-29 Union Hall Street in Jamaica. The van was a dollar van, where you can pay $1 and go anywhere you want.

As medics tended to the woman, Eyewitness News is told the van sped off with police in pursuit. The van eventually crashed about 2 miles away near the Van Wyck Expressway.

Authorities report the driver, Jameson Golding, then fled on foot and was arrested a few blocks away.

Some neighbors believe police were already chasing the van when the woman jumped out. They say she was frightened and she may have felt it would be safer to get out.

Golding is charged with resisting arrest, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving, among other charges.
