CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 26-year-old woman was shot in the chest Thursday afternoon when three men forced their way into her basement apartment in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the city's Southwest Side.

The incident happened at about 4 p.m. in the 5900-block of South Kenneth Avenue near Midway Airport. The woman seriously injured and transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center.

No one is in custody.

One of the three men was wearing a blue Postal Service uniform when they knocked on the woman's door, Chicago police said. When she opened the door, they fired a shot at her and she closed the door. The men then forced the door open.

The offenders were described to police as being black and between the ages of 25 and 30 years old.

A witness said they saw two men, and one more waiting in a vehicle, who were unfamiliar to those who lived in the close-knit community.

A man who answered the door at the home declined comment in Spanish. Neighbors said the family is very friendly and owns two homes in the neighborhood.

Residents said a man with disabilities lives in the house. A wheelchair ramp is in front of the house.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service appears to have also sent someone to the scene.
