MATTESON, Ill. (WLS) -- Several bullets struck a woman's car early Friday on I-57 near U.S. 30 in south suburban Matteson.

Illinois State Police said they received a call of shots fired on northbound I-57 between Vollmer Road and U.S. 30 just after midnight. Officers shut down that stretch of the expressway for several hours to canvas the pavement for shell casings. They recovered six shell casings.

The woman was alone in her car and was not injured. She was able to pull off I-57 and made it to a Shell gas station.

Investigators have not released a description of the suspect. There is no word on a motive.

So far this year, more than 20 expressway shootings have occurred in the Chicago area.

In June and July, state police launched an operation to stop expressway violence using extra patrols, undercover officers and aircraft surveillance. They coordinated with the Chicago police and the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Troopers said even though the operation is over, they continue to work together to help minimize expressway shootings.
