AURORA, Ill. (WLS) -- An 8-year-old boy called 911 after his mother fell into a freezing pond in southwest suburban Aurora last weekend while trying to save their family dog.

"Mom, come to the land!" Kayden Medernach said as he screamed for his mother, Cathy, to return to shore.

She had used a canoe to reach their dog, Bailey, who had fallen into the pond while chasing birds. Moments later, the canoe tipped and she fell through the thin ice.

"I didn't think at all. I should have thought because my husband is a fireman. He tells me stories all the time. I know, I didn't think," Cathy Medernach said.

Rescuers arrived just in time to pull Cathy and the dog from the water.

Both are going to be OK.
