CHICAGO (WLS) -- Some Chicago area veterans looking for companionship have some real friends at the Anti-Cruelty Society.

Veterans looking to find a new, furry friend to add to their families did so on Monday at the Anti-Cruelty Society. Fifth Third Bank is covering the cost of adoptions so that a few veterans visiting the Anti-Cruelty Society can take home a rescue dog or cat and pay no adoption fees.

The event was moderated by ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter Janet Davies and attended by political officials supporting the day.

"It's companionship mostly and it helps me since I'm retired," said Army Reserve veteran Lawrence Green.

Veterans have given so much to the country and sometimes adopting a dog or a cat can truly make a difference in their lives.

"Not only do they get the benefit, but we can find homes for these lovely animals and everybody wins," State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka said.

The event gave veterans the opportunity get to know some of the pets available for adoption and some of them really connected with the pets.

"We all know how much pets add to our lives," said Robyn Barbiers, President, Anti-Cruelty Society Chicago. "Joy, love and comfort. We're really happy to give back to those who have served our country.
