CHICAGO (WLS) -- The internet is the latest battleground in the contentious campaign for Illinois governor.

A web ad based on the classic board game Monopoly is kicking up a controversy between Governor Pat Quinn and his Republican challenger Bruce Rauner.

In the one minute video, an actor playing a venture capitalist explains "Rauneropoly."

Rauner, the Republican venture capitalist, toured a west suburban manufacturing plant. He said he was proud of his 32 successful years in the private equity business as he questioned the Democratic incumbent's use of real money.

Then Rauner pivoted, using his own monopoly metaphor to mention the ongoing federal investigation into the governor's 2010 anti-violence program.

In Chicago, Quinn's running mate Paul Vallas unveiled the Bruce Rauner "crime tree." It allegedly linked Rauner's firm GTCR and past executives involved in lawsuits and/or corruption, including one guilty in the bribery case that led to former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's conviction:

Rauner tried to explain, saying, "My understanding is that was an executive who was mid-level at the company who was there before our involvement."

"At the end of the day Bruce Rauner fails to take responsibility, but yet he doesn't fail to take the profits," Vallas said.

As "Rauneropoly" makes the rounds on social media, the Republican has stepped up his fundraising, collecting four times as much as Governor Quinn since July.
