Rauner sets out term limit plan, Quinn campaign blasts his budget

CHICAGO (WLS) -- In the race for Illinois governor, Republican Bruce Rauner pushed his plan for term limits today, but incumbent Pat Quinn wanted to focus on Rauner's budget plan.

In a carefully choreographed campaign event Monday surrounded by hand-picked college age supporters, Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner made his pitch for term limits today.

"One of the most important things we can do to shake up Springfield is term limits on career politicians who work there," Rauner said.

But it wasn't term limits that got the attention of the Quinn campaign. Paul Vallas, Democrat Gov. Pat Quinn's running mate, blasted Rauner's budget plan.

Rauner is calling to roll back the state's income tax increase, freeze property taxes as well as raise $600 million in revenue by taxing certain services.

"The fundamental problem with the plan is the numbers don't add up," Vallas said. "In fact, they don't come close to adding up."

According to Quinn campaign numbers, the Rauner tax plan leaves an $8 billion hole in the budget. Vallas says that is money that will directly slash education, but according to a new poll today voters like Rauner's economic plan.

"This isn't about poll-tested decisions based on what you want to tax," Vallas maintained.

Rauner admits his service tax will not make up for the reduced income tax revenue, but says details of the tax structure must be worked out by the General Assembly, including the exact percentage of the income tax rate.

"We shouldn't get caught up in a one year budget, that is a mistake," Rauner said. "What we need to do is make basic structural changes over time so we become a growth state."
