CHICAGO (WLS) -- As spending on gift cards continues to increase, the Better Business Bureau warns consumers to take precautions when buying them so as to avoid scams.

The National Retail Federation says Americans spend more than $31 billion on gift cards. To protect the money they spend on the cards, and to ensure the value reaches the recipient, Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of Chicago's Better Business Bureau, cautions consumers to avoid open gift card displays in stores and online auction sites.

To avoid being scammed when purchasing gift cards, the BBB recommends:

Don't buy gift cards from online auction sites. Online auction sites are rife with gift card fraud. Some of the cards are real, but many are stolen, counterfeit or used, and not worth the risk to the buyer.

Only buy gift cards directly from the store issuing the gift or from a secure retailer's website. If you buy a gift card online, make sure you always buy It from the place where you plan to use it.

Always carefully examine both the front and back of the gift card before you buy it. If you can see a PIN number, get a different card. If the card looks like it may have been tampered with, get a different card.

Always ask the store cashier to scan the gift card in front of you. This will guarantee the card is valid when you buy it and that it reflects the balance you charged.

Always keep your receipt as proof of purchase as long as there is money stored on the gift card. Since many retailers can track where the gift card was purchased, activated and used, some retailers will replace a stolen card for you if you have your receipt.

If possible, register your gift card on the store's website. This option is not all stores, but if it is available it will help you keep track of your card and discover any misuse of the card sooner.

Never ever give your Social Security number, date of birth or any other unneeded private information when you purchase a gift card. No reputable company will ask for this information.
