Saving money on your grocery bill
Want to save big on your grocery bill without clipping coupons?

Want to save big on your grocery bill without clipping coupons? A few small changes in the way you shop could save an average family thousands of dollars a year.

For the Krauses of Guilford, Conn., groceries eat up a huge chunk of their family budget.

"We have one son who is 16, and one is 15, they are actively involved in sports so they do eat a lot!" said Tyson Krause.

Every week this family of five's grocery bills top $600 - that's close to $30,000 a year!

"We have two kids fast approaching college, so we could definitely use some extra cash for that," Krause said.

So we enlisted the help of ABC News' very own Lifestyle Editor Genevieve Brown and headed to their local grocery, list in-hand.

"So I've come up with a three-pronged approach to savings, no coupon-clipping," Brown said.

First, a one-of-a kind app Grocery Pal puts the savings right on your mobile phone.

"You plug in your zip code. And from there, it brings up a list of stores in your area," Brown said.

The app directs you to in-store sales.

"Organic blueberries, $3.99. Look at this," Brown said. "You want Starbucks coffee? Here it is - $6.99 down from $9.99.

"Yogurt we eat a lot of," said Candice Krause.

"Fage Greek yogurt, ten for $10," Brown said.

"Wow, we're saving 80 cents a container," Krause said.

And a little supermarket secret - pick products on the top and bottom shelves, they're often a better deal.

"You're gonna find that the most expensive items are the ones that the grocery store puts at eye level," Brown said. "So here we go. We got $4.19 up here, $3.29 up here. But all of a sudden, we look down here. And we're looking at $1.74."

"One thing I just want to point out to you when you're shopping is to not neglect the ends of the aisles, great deals right here," Brown said.

Finally, did you know you can get paid to shop? Brown says to use apps like Checkout 51 or Ibotta, which asks you to watch a video or take a survey about the product you're about to buy.

After you're done shopping, select your items, scan the barcode and upload your receipt - instant cash back.

After checking out, these simple supermarket hacks are saving them big.

"You're saving $120 a week on groceries. Let's see how much that is for the year," Brown said.

All-in-all, that's over $6,000 a year.

One more tip to put money back in your pocket - consider using websites like KitchMe.com, which suggest recipes based on what's on sale that week, saving you time and money.

And instead of spending hours clipping paper coupons, log onto websites like LOZO.com, RetailMeNot.com or CouponSherpa.com and type in your grocery list and zip code to find instant offers in your area.
