Oak Park Women's Exchange celebrates 40th anniversary
From hand-made soaps to intricate jewelry, the Oak Park Women's Exchange has been a popular destination for one-of-a-kind artistry for the past 40 years.

OAK PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- From hand-made soaps to intricate jewelry, the Oak Park Women's Exchange has been a popular destination for one-of-a-kind artistry for the past 40 years.

"I first came to the Exchange because I needed a creative outlet and I couldn't give any more stuff away," said Diane Symonanis. "And the Women's Exchange, I like the whole idea of a co-op."

Members pay a fee to become part of the co-op. It allows crafters to have retail space to display and sell their goods without the overhead of owning a store. They also volunteer their time and services so there are no costs for employees.

"It's a strong commitment to the philosophy of women helping other women to develop commercial businesses," said Francine Rattenbury. "We do it in a way that I think is unique to women's relationships. It's very cooperative and non-competitive."

While the Women's Exchange remains a place for women to hone their business skills and earn some extra cash, members say it has also developed into a network of support that is unrivaled and unconditional.

"We've had members who've gone through some hard times and we're always the first ones there," said Deanne Alexander. "We're the first ones to send the card to the hospital, first ones to visit, the first ones to make sure they have a meal if they need it. "

The Oak Park Women's Exchange will host its 40th anniversary celebration Thursday, July 31, from noon to 8 p.m.
