'Rotas - Broken' examines domestic violence
The Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater at Northeastern Illinois presents a theater and dance production examining domestic violence.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Domestic violence has been in the news a lot lately due to cases involving NFL players. Now the Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater, in residence at Northeastern Illinois University, presents a theater and dance production that examines issues related to domestic violence.

"Rotas - Broken" was written by director Luis Lorente. Choreographer Paloma Gomez performs in it with her sister Raquel Gomez. Both are renowned Flamenco and Spanish dancers and former principals of the National Ballet of Spain.

Proceeds from the Chicago performance benefit several community organizations, including Mujeres Latinas en Accion, Norwegian American Hospital Foundation, Casa Central, and the Women's Studies Department at Northeastern Illinois University.

Estela Melgoza, domestic violence program director with Mujeres Latinas en Accion, came into our ABC 7 Eyewitness News studio to talk about the performance and how her organization and others help fight the issue of domestic violence.
