Police search for driver who killed two people on the South Loop

HOUSTON -- Police continue searching for the driver of a white Silverado truck who hit and killed two people on Loop 610. Both men died on the scene. Investigators have not released the victims' names but say one was trying to help the other, whose dog was loose on the highway.

On Sunday evening, the driver of a Dodge Durango lost control and hit a guardrail. Police say his dog in the back seat distracted him. Jeremiah Horton saw the accident happen.

"I saw a little smoke so I went in and tried to save him, whoever was in it, I was just trying to get him out," Horton said.

The driver wasn't hurt, but his dog got loose and ran onto the road. Another driver stopped to help and was able to wrangle the pit bull. Horton said he and the man who caught the dog walked back to their cars to leave.

"He and I were shaking hands and I asked him if he was OK. He asked if I was OK, and immediately when I heard some skidding, I jumped over the rail. He didn't and the truck ran him over," Horton said.

Police say a man in a white Chevy Silverado truck hit the man, then hit the dog owner, killing them both.

"It was tragic that I almost got killed trying to help somebody," Horton said.

Then, investigators say a second Silverado truck, this one black, sped by and ran over the man hit first, a second time. Police took that driver downtown for questioning. But the man in the white truck got out of his pickup and ran from the scene.

Horton says he knows he's lucky he wasn't hit, but can't get what happened out of his mind.

"I got a second chance at life."
