City, suburbs shiver as temps dip below freezing
Chicago saw temperatures dip into the 20s on Wednesday, and there were even a few snowflakes flying in the city and suburbs.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (WLS) -- Chicago saw temperatures dip into the 20s on Wednesday, and there were even a few snowflakes flying in the city and suburbs.

At the home of Chopper7 HD in Schaumburg, judging the winds is a matter of professional safety. It's just as critical to the men on the tarmac installing new apron lighting, signage and turf.

"It's cold. The wind makes it even colder, snow makes it even colder," said Anon Bruton, of April Cobra.

Joe Desplinter of J.F. Edwards Construction says as he gets older, this kind of work simply gets harder. And the polar vortex-infused welcome to the winter of 2014-15 gives him cause to shiver physically and mentally.

"You move slower, it takes more clothing and can't move as easy," said Desplinter.

But the kids of Burke Elementary School offer a window on a different mindset about the cold. The South Side students got new coats after their parent teacher conferences on Wednesday courtesy of the FBI Academy Alumni Association.

And don't hold out for a warm-up anytime soon - there will be several reinforcing cold shots through next week, with the possibility for the first accumulating snowfall this weekend, ABC7 meteorologist Mike Caplan said.
