Making the situation worse, more storms rolled across the Chicago area Thursday afternoon and evening. Patchy, dense fog also affected parts of Chicago, Waukegan, Gary and Valparaiso, Thursday morning.

The Chicago Department of Aviation said in addition to the cancellations at O'Hare, airlines are experiencing 30-minute delays on average.

Midway is experiencing some delays and cancellations as of Thursday afternoon.

The aviation department recommends passengers call ahead or check online to see the status of their flights.

Passengers stranded overnight at O'Hare

Thousands of passengers were stranded overnight at O'Hare after their Wednesday flights were canceled due to severe weather. O'Hare staff set up about 1,500 cots, which weren't enough. Many people camped out on the floor or benches while waiting for information on the next avaiable flight to their destinations.

Jim Coppinger hoped to fly out Thursday morning.

"The airport closed down because of the storms," Coppinger said. "Between Dallas and Chicago, planes stuck there or here. So we weren't able to get on."
